Thursday's Thoughts

Two more days until the weekend!  Not sure why, but I really need this one.  Maybe because I received my new job description and my workload seems to have doubled - I said "seems" because a few projects will be leaving me effective 1/1/12.  Can anyone else believe that 2012 is around the corner!?!? Where did 2011 go??

Here are two dilemmas that keep me up at night (not really, but they do pop in my head at random times, especially when I should be focusing on something else):
1. Engagement Photos - are they necessary or just a great excuse for fancy pictures?  Should I ask E's stepmom, a photography teacher, to take them? Or shell out a couple hundred bucks for a professional who I might feel more comfortable with and will guide us as to how to pose, etc?
2. Setting a Budget - where to start? Tried to talk to my parents when we were home for Thanksgiving and they gave me no set dollar amount, just "yes, we want to be involved". Great, care to elaborate?!?!?

PS - Happy Happy Birthday to my fabulous friend JBJG!

  1. I could go on for days about #2, so I'll just address #1.

Engagement pictures are nice to have, but not necessary. It can be a good way to test out a photographer before using them at your wedding. It might be nice for you guys to do them in San Diego where you met/got engaged to document that since it sounds like you'll be getting married elsewhere.

Think about what you might use them for too. Do you want a save the date? just a Christmas card? a nice framed photo for the house? One hour with a photographer will yield maybe 90 shots, of which you'll probably only use 5-6 (I usually have those fave shots I use over and over for framed pics, cards, etc.).

If you don't want to go full blown photogrpaher (and price tag), try looking on craigslist or weddingwire for some folks newer to the wedding photography industry. You might be able to find someone who can do pics for cheaper.

The last time we did family pictures, while the photographer was great with direction, I frankly learned everything I need to know by googling and reading blogs. TONS of wedding bloggers give advice about what to wear and how to get comfortable in front of the camera. Scour the high end photog sites and figure out which types and styles of pictures you like, which poses, which outfits. Then think about how you photograph and how you want to look.

Be sure to work with someone who will give you the photo rights at the end. That way you can print the pictures out on your own instead of having to pay the photographer for prints.

Whoa! Monster comment! Hope this was helpful.
